The Experience
Viaggi Del Mappamondo invites holidaymakers to enjoy a guided tour of some of Tuscany’s most famous cities, sights and villages including Montepulciano, Pienza, Siena, San Gimignano, Tavernelle, Chianti Area, Pisa, La Spezia, Portovenere, Golfo dei Poeti, Cinque Terre, Carrara, Marble Caves and Montecarlo di Lucca. Accommodation is provided at the four star Hotel Garden in Siena and Hotel NH La Spezia in La Spezia (or similar hotels). The tour includes an expert multi-lingual guide, air-conditioned coach transportation, sightseeing and tasting of local products.
Itinerary
Day 1 (Sunday): Rome - Montepulciano - Pienza - Siena
- At 8am meet at Via Bastioni di Michelangelo, 21 or pickup at the hotel from 7.30am to 7.45am
- Meet your multilingual tour leader and start a trip through the rolling hills of the Chianti Region
- In the hilltop town of Montepulciano, guests may admire medieval and Renaissance buildings and visit a cellar to taste grape beverages and local products like ham, cheese and salami
- Proceed to Pienza, the Renaissance town built under Pope Pius II and also well-known for its Pecorino cheese
- The tour will proceed to Siena where travellers may enjoy a visit of the old city centre and walk along the medieval streets admiring the palaces. The sightseeing tour will end in the Piazza del Campo with its spectacular Cathedral and site of the famous 600-old horse-race, called Il Palio
- Dinner and overnight at Hotel Garden or similar
Day 2 (Monday): Siena - San Gimignano - Tavernelle - Chianti Area - Pisa - La Spezia
- Breakfast at the hotel and depart to San Gimignano, a small city situated on a hilltop and famous for its numerous towers, frescoes and other art treasures
- Proceed to Tavernelle Val di Pesa located within the Chianti Classico Gallo Nero region, where we will make a stop at the farmhouse La Tancia to enjoy grape beverage tasting with light lunch
- The tour continues to Pisa where you will have free time for lunch, enjoy an early afternoon walk in the historical centre, visit Piazza dei Miracoli with its famous Leaning Tower (exterior visit), The Baptistery (exterior visit) and other monuments
- Proceed to La Spezia
- Dinner and overnight at the Hotel NH La Spezia or similar
Day 3 (Tuesday): La Spezia - Portovenere - Golfo dei Poeti - Cinque Terre - La Spezia
- Breakfast at the hotel followed by a boat trip to discover the famous Cinque Terre, an area suspended between sea and land, hanging from sheer cliffs surrounded by hills and vineyards. By touring the coastline by boat, guests will have the possibility to admire the landscape (In the event of rough sea, the visit will be done partly by coach and partly by train)
- During the tour, the boat will reach Portovenere and the most important villages: Porto Venere, Vernazza and Monterosso
- Located on the Gulf of Poets, Portovenere, is a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting a picturesque harbor lined with brightly colored houses,narrow medieval streets lined with shops that lead up the hill from the ancient city gate to the castle
- The small fishing village Vernazza is probably the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country
- Monterosso It is the largest of the five coastal villages, boasting scenic beaches, reefs and crystal clear waters
- Board the train from Monterosso and arrive in La Spezia
- Dinner and overnight at Hotel NH La Spezia or similar
Day 4 (Wednesday): La Spezia - Carrara - Marble Caves - Montecarlo di Lucca - Rome
- Breakfast at the hotel followed by a visit to Carrara to see the impressive marble quarries carved deep into the mountain ( the place where Michelangelo took the raw material to create his masterpieces). Visit the quarry museum and admire ancient tools, some sculptures and the quarryman’s house
- Continue to Montecarlo di Lucca and stop at a farmhouse to taste Tuscan food specialities including olive oil, cheese, bread, grape beverages, and pasta
- Proceed to Rome (arrive in the evening)
